This Sunday, Dec. 8, World of Coca-Cola will offer free admission for all guests – for the first time in the attraction’s history. The offer is in celebration of The Coca-Cola Company’s 100th anniversary of becoming a publicly traded company.
On May 8, 1886, the first Coca-Cola was served in Atlanta. Thirty-three years later, in 1919, company made its initial public offering. An original $40 share – along with reinvested dividends – would be worth more than $18 million today. The company has grown with Atlanta, and 16% of shareowners of record live in Georgia.
To celebrate a century as a public company, Coca-Cola is offering free admission at World of Coke on Dec. 8. Guests will also receive a commemorative glass Coca-Cola bottle (see above) while supplies last.
Visitors at World of Coca-Cola can sample more than 100 drinks from around the world, see the vault where Coca-Cola’s secret recipe is guarded and snap photos with the iconic Coca-Cola Polar Bear.
The company is also marking its 100th anniversary on Monday, Dec. 9, by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

Military members (active duty, reserves and retirees) can visit World of Coca-Cola free of charge year-round, but Veterans Day is extra special. To show World of Coca-Cola’s gratitude to the men and women who serve our country, the attraction is extending a special offer to their loved ones as well. From Friday, Nov. 1, to Monday, Nov. 11, members of the Armed Forces may purchase up to four half-price general admission tickets for their friends and family to join them in visiting the attraction. Tickets may be purchased with a valid Armed Forces ID card at the attraction’s ticketing windows.
Veterans Day Parade
The 38th Annual Georgia Veterans Day Parade will begin in Downtown Atlanta at 11:11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. The parade will pass directly in front of World of Coca-Cola, where the Reviewing Stand will be located, on Baker Street SE.
Veterans Day Festival
Following the parade, a free Veterans Day Festival will take place from 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. in Pemberton Place near World of Coca-Cola. The festival will feature a variety of exhibitor tents, as well as a performance by the 116th Army Band. The event is free and open to the public.
Zoo Atlanta had a member's only night this past Saturday. My family humored me, despite the heat, and we visited to check out the updated exhibits. Some animals aren't in their new homes yet, they're still acclimating. We did, though, get to see the new male elephant and the newest grandbaby from Willy B.
From what we were told, the male is still in quarantine. He'll be placed out in his new area at a later date. The building he was in, though, is huge.
The warthogs and zebras were out in their new areas. You could see the giraffes, but they were closer to their building.
No changes in the aviary, still pretty birds everywhere.
The tanuki had changed areas. One was out looking at the crowd, the other was in the back of his enclosure doing his own thing.
We did things kind of out of order. We managed to miss the reptile house the first pass through the zoo. It was good way to cool off, though.
No telling when I'll get back over there. Hopefully after the meerkats and other animals are out in their new exhibits.
We've had tickets to go for a while, but just hadn't gotten around to it. So yesterday, the kids and I went to check it out. The last time my kids went, my son was in 4th grade. If you want to go, they are having free days, check their website for information. Note as well, that parking is NOT free, but it's also not too expensive.
The museum is doing updates/changes to parts, so some if it is closed. The Africa exhibit upstairs is relatively small and is the only thing currently on that level.
After, we went to a restaurant my daughter had heard about called BoruBoru. They make takoyaki which is one of her favorite snacks. Unfortunately, they were out by the time we got there. It's not a cheap place to eat, though you do get a lot of food. The PokeBowls are their main dish. No pictures of the food, but it was good.
Each year, World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium and Center for Civil and Human Rights invite local educators, including homeschool teachers, to visit the attractions for free to learn about educational and field trip opportunities.
Attending educators visit the attractions from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 and may bring one guest, also free of charge. (They may purchase tickets for additional guests.) Pre-registration is required, so interested educators can register at https://www.georgiaaquarium.org/educator-open-house/. A valid teacher ID is required for entry to the event, and homeschool teachers may bring a copy of their Letter of Intent.
World of Coca-Cola welcomes school field trips throughout the year, and dozens of Georgia Performance Standards can be fulfilled at the attraction. World of Coca-Cola offers a teacher toolkit on its website, which outlines all of those Standards and provides pre- and post-visit activities to assist with lesson planning.
What better way to kick off the Big Game weekend than hanging with NFL legends? On Friday, Feb. 1, World of Coca-Cola will host a “Champions Chat” featuring none other than “Mean” Joe Greene and Carl Banks, moderated by Desmond Howard. Fans won’t want to miss these three former NFL champions swapping stories from the glory days, commenting on this year’s match-up and answering questions from the audience. The event will take place from 2:15 to 3 p.m. and is free with general admission tickets to the attraction.
There aren’t many combinations more classic than Coke and football. In celebration of this year’s Big Game, a special, limited-time exhibit showcases footballs, jerseys, ads and other items from the Coca-Cola Archives. Speaking of iconic, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the “Mean” Joe Greene Coca-Cola commercial, which is playing in the exhibit.
Fans looking for a true taste of Coca-Cola and football are in luck. Coca-Cola Game Day Magic and Coca-Cola Zero Game Day Magic will be available for alimited time on Coca-Cola Freestyle in the Taste It! Beverage Lounge.
On Feb. 1 and 2, football fans can capture the moment by snapping a group shot in an interactive, football-themed photo opp. Not only will they walk away with free printed images – they can also share their experience instantly on social media. They've upped their game and changed the story. The princess has now stepped into her father's shoes and rules the land. A new tale takes place and the joust goes on. I like the new show, it came off very well. It's less aggressive (no foreign diplomat), but the queen definitely displays her power when needed. You still have your knights competing to display their skills and bring honor to their land. There is still some conflict as well. I won't say more than that, I don't like giving out story line spoilers. My daughter actually caught our knight's (red knight) first flower of the show. I have a small snippet of the show (the horses) that I can share, though Take a gander..
The food was as good as usual. The menu has changed slightly in that it no longer includes ribs. The desert was changed to vanilla ice cream as well. For those that know me, you know that I rarely drink alcohol. I do, though, REALLY like their mead. (Alcohol is not included in the price.) You still get plenty to eat, though, so no worries there. We had fewer leftovers to take home than before, which isn't a bad thing either.
If you've never been, gratuities are NOT included. Plan to bring a little extra to tip your server with.
All said and done, my family had a good time. We enjoyed the changes. The new costumes are definitely neat. The knights helmets were cool to see. My daughter liked the blue knight's head band. I liked the green knight's helmet, reminded me of a particular Marvel character. The sound effects have changed somewhat too. They both help the show and give a bit of humor if you know what you're listening to. When you go, see if you can hear the tie-fighter.

We've been fortunate in that we got to see so many different kpop groups perform in Atlanta this year: 24K, UP10TION, B.A.P, Day 6, MonstaX and now A.C.E.. We also got to see Black Violin, which was totally awesome too. Not sure what we'll get to see next year. She enters college next fall which will challenge us to get her to concerts.

My daughter and I got to go to this concert last night. IT WAS AWESOME! I captured 3 videos of the performance, which I've posted on my youtube channel I was a bit late getting this post done but feel free to check out the videos!
I went to the Atlanta Pride Parade yesterday for the first time. I went with a group of 200+ moms, dads, aunts, etc to give out free hugs. We took up a block on both sides of the road. It was awesome being able to show our support to the ones in the parade (and the ones not). I'll post more pictures and video on my instagram account. There was a wonderful turn out for the day and I had fun wandering the festival afterward and giving out hugs.

I was invited to attend Educator's Day at the World of Coca Cola, Georgia Aquarium, and Center for Civil and Human Rights.
Were you aware that you can take your child (as a home school student) or your school can take your child to the World of Coca-Cola and actually LEARN while they're there? Admittedly, it's aimed more at 8th-12th grade students, but still. What better way to learn than hands on while doing something fun?
You can actually do the same thing at the Georgia Aquarium (not as surprising) as well as at the Center for Civil and Human Rights. All three make great resources to utilize when possible. I took my family along with me for the day. The Coke Museum is always fun, especially to try the sampling floor. We always end up talking about what the different cultures like in flavors. Hubs hadn't had Beverly (or at least didn't remember having tried it), so we made sure he did.
It was my son's and husband's first time visiting the Center for Civil and Human Rights. They found it very interesting and informative. It would be fun to go back when they're having a special event to learn something new.
The Aquarium opened up the back education loop for educators. We were able to see the top side of Tropical Diver, Ocean Voyager, Coldwater Quest (belugas), and River Scout. Neither of the boys had ever been up there, so they had a blast. I hadn't had a chance to see the puffins (I stopped volunteering before they were in place), so that was neat to see.
All together, we had a lot of fun. If my kids were younger, I'd definitely make an effort to include some of the learning points the three facilities provide. As it is, I recommend it to fellow educators and home school parents to give it a look over.
I rejoined the Atlanta Zoo this year. I took my kids plus two out a month or so ago. I decided I wanted to get out again Sunday morning, so I convinced everyone to get up "early" so we could be there by 9a. Until October, members can get in 30 minutes earlier on Sundays, so I really wanted to take advantage of that. Especially given that one of the lots is currently under construction which can make finding a parking spot near the Zoo an issue.
With the construction going on and several exhibits closed, it only took us about 2 hours to go through and see everything. The nice part was that it wasn't overly hot by the time we got home. Below are some of the shots I managed to take in between Poke-hunting.
I was invited to attend the new Atlanta Comic Con as press in exchange for my pre-post and posting a review at the end.
I have to admit, I was rather disappointed by the turn out of attendees, especially on Friday. I knew it would be low (workday and all that), but it was still smaller than expected. It didn't start until noon, so we picked up our passes and got lunch before diving in. Our only real confusion Friday was thinking that the convention was in building A (like Momocon), when it was actually in building C. I mostly wandered to see what was going on where. There were free 80's type arcade games to play on as well as a room set up to play various XBox games. I did go to a family friendly freestyle D&D panel, which was interesting (and funny) to watch.
Optimus Prime
Saturday was considerably more interesting. A lot more people came out for the convention, so there was a lot more going on. I started my day out by going to the panel featuring Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings and more recently in Stranger Things). I stayed in the panel area and sat in on Linda Larkin and Paige O'Hara (voice of Jasmine and Belle respectively).

I followed that up by going and visiting with the men from Helluva Productions. They showed a short film of what they HAD and followed it up with some examples of work from a new animator. Barring any production or other issues happening between now and then, look for a potentially good new animation out in October (may not be appropriate for younger audiences).

I watched the girls for a while and checked out some of the games in the 1UP game room. We also took our time going through the exhibitors hall. I picked up 3 themed mystery boxes while there (the main one being Harry Potter themed) and a hand crafted phoenix figure from HP. I finished my day up on an HP note with the Matthew Lewis (Neville from Harry Potter) panel.

Sunday we discovered that there was an Atlanta United game. It made getting in/out of the convention center challenging to say the least. Otherwise, I attended Renee O'Connor's panel as well as Cary Elwes'.
My son and I attended the Sadie the Science Lady presentation and then finished our con out by watching another freestyle D and D panel, this one aimed at the 18+ group. Considerably more humorous, but definitely not for the younger set.
Science Rap
There was definitely a good selection of guests in attendance (certainly aided by the fact that Stranger Things is filming in Gwinnett). They had an app that you could use to keep track of the schedule. My request on this one would be that you be able to pick the panels you're interested in and make your own calendar to track them (similar to the one used by Momocon). For the bigger panels, they used 3 rooms together with a lot of chairs. If the crowd had actually filled the room, the people on the sides would NEVER have seen the panelist. There were no monitors for them to watch. Also, the acoustics in the room weren't very good either. There was a definite echo at times and the speaker would occasionally get lost in clarity.
My daughter would love to see a "quiet space" for those that get overwhelmed or just need a time out for a while. She and her best friend were also concerned by the price. It wasn't cheap for a 3 day admission, even getting them online early. Talking with another attendee, she was concerned that there hadn't been enough advance notice for the cosplayers to really come out in force. Apparently another con was this weekend and most had travelled for that one. Hopefully if this one happens again next year, there will be plenty of notice so they can attend.
A kudos to the Gamers on the Edge group that sponsored the 1UP video game room. The girls really appreciated being able to play games aimed at multiple players and fewer single person games. I liked the fact that they were supporting the Children's Miracle Network with both a raffle and an item sale. We entered the raffle (didn't win) and I got a beanie. Though I suspect the beanie will be taken over by one of the children at some point.
If it does happen again next year and a larger number attend, they'll need more panels. My son would suggest fan-run panels or something similar. He appreciated the scheduling tasks, but isn't one to appreciate sitting an hour in between panels he finds interesting. The panels he DID attend, though, he definitely enjoyed.
