Free Admission to the World of Coca-Cola this Sunday! #ad @WorldofCocaCola

This Sunday, Dec. 8, World of Coca-Cola will offer free admission for all guests – for the first time in the attraction’s history. The offer is in celebration of The Coca-Cola Company’s 100th anniversary of becoming a publicly traded company.

On May 8, 1886, the first Coca-Cola was served in Atlanta. Thirty-three years later, in 1919, company made its initial public offering. An original $40 share – along with reinvested dividends – would be worth more than $18 million today. The company has grown with Atlanta, and 16% of shareowners of record live in Georgia.

To celebrate a century as a public company, Coca-Cola is offering free admission at World of Coke on Dec. 8. Guests will also receive a commemorative glass Coca-Cola bottle (see above) while supplies last.

Visitors at World of Coca-Cola can sample more than 100 drinks from around the world, see the vault where Coca-Cola’s secret recipe is guarded and snap photos with the iconic Coca-Cola Polar Bear.

The company is also marking its 100th anniversary on Monday, Dec. 9, by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

Touring the Governor's Mansion #Milledgeville #GCSUFamilyWeekend

My family went to Milledgeville to visit with girl-child for Georgia College's Family Weekend. We only did two of the events that the school put on. The morning welcome and the tour of the Governor's mansion. The rest of the time we just wandered campus and hung out as a family. The tour of the mansion, though was cool. It's a structurally interesting building.

The dome that exists INSIDE the building, doesn't exist outside of it (it's hidden).  This is the view from the floor looking up.

And this is a copy of the plans that show it's inside the building, but not visible outside.

It's an interesting place to visit.  The students at GCSU have free access to it, which is cool.

Visiting the new @ZooAtl changes #animals #ZooAtlanta #family

Zoo Atlanta had a member's only night this past Saturday.  My family humored me, despite the heat, and we visited to check out the updated exhibits.  Some animals aren't in their new homes yet, they're still acclimating.  We did, though, get to see the new male elephant and the newest grandbaby from Willy B.

From what we were told, the male is still in quarantine.  He'll be placed out in his new area at a later date.  The building he was in, though, is huge.

The warthogs and zebras were out in their new areas.  You could see the giraffes, but they were closer to their building.

No changes in the aviary, still pretty birds everywhere.

The tanuki had changed areas.  One was out looking at the crowd, the other was in the back of his enclosure doing his own thing.

We did things kind of out of order.  We managed to miss the reptile house the first pass through the zoo.  It was good way to cool off, though.

No telling when I'll get back over there. Hopefully after the meerkats and other animals are out in their new exhibits.

Michael C. Carlos Museum @Emory #family #museum #atlanta

We've had tickets to go for a while, but just hadn't gotten around to it. So yesterday, the kids and I went to check it out. The last time my kids went, my son was in 4th grade. If you want to go, they are having free days, check their website for information.  Note as well, that parking is NOT free, but it's also not too expensive.

The museum is doing updates/changes to parts, so some if it is closed.  The Africa exhibit upstairs is relatively small and is the only thing currently on that level.

After, we went to a restaurant my daughter had heard about called BoruBoru.  They make takoyaki which is one of her favorite snacks.  Unfortunately, they were out by the time we got there.  It's not a cheap place to eat, though you do get a lot of food.  The PokeBowls are their main dish.  No pictures of the food, but it was good.

Investing in my kids #college #collegefund

I want to state up front that kids don't have to go to college to have a great career.  However, some fields do require that extra push to get a good placement.  That said, when my guys were little, my husband and I started Coverdell savings accounts for them for college.  We didn't invest a lot each month, but it was something.  With rising college costs, I'm really glad we did it.

For both of my kids, they take care of tuition.  Husband and I will do room/board while they're attending.  For my son (at KSU), this has worked out well.  After Hope, his spending account will cover almost all of the tuition he has to pay.  For my daughter (at GCSU), hers won't last quite as long. Primarily because her tuition is a bit higher than her brother's.  She also is receiving the Hope.

Both keep looking for additional scholarships to assist in the fees.  My son is caught in the catch-22 that is you can't get a job without experience, but you can't get experience without a job.  Daughter will have a problem with the job thing as she's a Theater major which means a lot of time spent with rehearsals and such.

At any rate, as a recommendation to friends/family/readers with young ones, invest in the savings account.  Even if they don't go to college they could go to a trade school.  The funds will go a long way to either..

Family trip to the National Cathedral #family #vacation #washingtondc

The National Cathedral is an impressive building.  It was raining when we came outside, so we didn't tour the grounds.  If you drive here, it's pay to park as well as pay to enter.  They're still recovering from the 2011 earthquake and are fundraising with legos (building a lego cathedral replica).  While I was there I lit a candle in remembrance of my sister (see my instagram for pictures).

Orientation Day #college #GeorgiaCollege

My daughter and I head off to campus for her orientation.  Not sure how I actually feel about this, but I guess it has to be done.

Family trip to the National Zoo #family #vacation #washingtondc

This wasn't our last stop of the day, but I took a lot of photos here.  We drove over early as we didn't want parking to be gone.  It's $25 to park at the zoo, even though the zoo itself is free.  There were food trucks scattered around for a choice of edibles.

Family trip to the National Arboretum #family #vacation #washingtondc

We actually did this one the same day as the Air and Space Museum.  With so much there being closed, we had extra time.  So we wandered into the Arboretum to check it out.

Inside and outside, there's a lot to explore.  There's even a children's garden with mister, area to dig, and more.

Family trip to Air and Space #family #vacation #summer #smithsonian #washingtondc

Our timing was really off for part of this trip.  2/3 of the Air and Space Museum were closed for renovations/updates.  So, it really didn't take us long at all to get through.  After we finished with the art, this is where we headed.

Happy 18th Birthday! #daughter #birthday

She graduated high school a few short weeks ago and is now turning 18.  Two major milestones all within one month!  Happy 18th birthday to my baby girl.

Family Trip to National Art Gallery #family #vacation #summer #washingtondc

There's plenty here if you're a fan of what I would call 'classical' art.  The first floor is filled with art (painting & sculpture) in both wings.  Downstairs is the gift shop and other types of art (furniture, dishes, etc).  All of it worth the time to take in.

While we were there we also saw painters practicing by duplicating some of the art work in the gallery.  Fascinating to watch them work.

Family Trip to Washington D.C. #family #summer #travel #washingtondc

Our last family trip before I have 2 kids in college full time.  Ack.  We went up to Washington D.C. and stayed in National Harbor.  The pictures will be broken up to different days.  I'll sort them by where we went.

We drove to one of the train stations and rode in to L'Enfant station.  If you go, they are renovating several stations and as a result there's only bus service/shuttles from those stations to a different station in operation.  I'd recommend checking those in advance.

We actually did NOT go to either of these iconic locations.  We had planned to, but plans changed based on heat and tiredness in the family.

Other than around National Harbor itself, the first "big" place we visited was the Hirshorn Museum.  We did a very quick walk through as none of us are big modern art fans.  From there we went to the Museum of Natural History.  It took us approximately 3 hours to work our way through (combination of lots of tour groups and just taking our time). Unfortunately, the hall of dinosaurs was closed for renovations/updates.

Unless you're willing to pay a considerable amount for the food (and air conditioning), I don't recommend eating inside the museums.  There were always food trucks in the area, which after paying for a lunch here, we found to be a better bargain (and better food).

The next stop we actually broke into two days.  We did the National Gallery of Art.  We only got in one wing and floor before we were just done for the day and headed back.  I'll post those pictures Wednesday.

Wordless Wednesday

I lit a candle for my sister at the National Cathedral.
