Visiting the new @ZooAtl changes #animals #ZooAtlanta #family

Zoo Atlanta had a member's only night this past Saturday.  My family humored me, despite the heat, and we visited to check out the updated exhibits.  Some animals aren't in their new homes yet, they're still acclimating.  We did, though, get to see the new male elephant and the newest grandbaby from Willy B.

From what we were told, the male is still in quarantine.  He'll be placed out in his new area at a later date.  The building he was in, though, is huge.

The warthogs and zebras were out in their new areas.  You could see the giraffes, but they were closer to their building.

No changes in the aviary, still pretty birds everywhere.

The tanuki had changed areas.  One was out looking at the crowd, the other was in the back of his enclosure doing his own thing.

We did things kind of out of order.  We managed to miss the reptile house the first pass through the zoo.  It was good way to cool off, though.

No telling when I'll get back over there. Hopefully after the meerkats and other animals are out in their new exhibits.

Visiting Zoo Atlanta on a whim #family #summer #nicemorningout

I rejoined the Atlanta Zoo this year. I took my kids plus two out a month or so ago. I decided I wanted to get out again Sunday morning, so I convinced everyone to get up "early" so we could be there by 9a. Until October, members can get in 30 minutes earlier on Sundays, so I really wanted to take advantage of that. Especially given that one of the lots is currently under construction which can make finding a parking spot near the Zoo an issue.

With the construction going on and several exhibits closed, it only took us about 2 hours to go through and see everything.  The nice part was that it wasn't overly hot by the time we got home.  Below are some of the shots I managed to take in between Poke-hunting.

Zoo Atlanta's Twigga Terrace

We were given the chance as members of Zoo Atlanta to preview the new Twigga Terrace. Opening March 31st, it will allow visitors to have the opportunity to feed the giraffes. The terrace is a platform that extends somewhat out into the giraffe/ostrich exhibit. Our understanding is that from approximately 10a-2p visitors will have the chance to feed the giraffes. It's first come first served until supplies run out.

Boo at the Zoo

I took my kids out to "Boo at the Zoo" on Sunday. It was a VERY busy day, but a very nice day to go. It was fun getting to see all the little kids in costume doing the activities and getting candy.

As we walked in, the tree was playing music and dancing.

Lots of young flamingos.

It's a rare sight for us to find the red panda out and awake.

This was a beautiful tortoise from Mexico. I loved the colors.

The Komodo was watching the crowds as much as the crowds watched him.

The staff put out Halloween stuff in the gorilla enclosures. It was fun watching the males discover the pumpkins and the 'scarecrows' they'd put out.

Another rare occasion for us was to see the Bongo out and close to the viewing area.

A very colorful snake, very poisonous but colorful.

One of the staff had this python out for close viewing.

An interesting snake to view.

My main reason for going to the Zoo was to see the two tiger cubs. We hadn't been to see them as yet, so the Halloween festivities were a good reason to go. The cubs were 'fighting' over a pumpkin (and generally being very playful).

It was a Zoo!

I took my kids and their buddies out to the Zoo Tuesday. We got out there before it got too hot and left in time to get lunch back at the house. It was what I'd call a "speed trip", but the kids seemed to enjoy it anyway. A worth while investment since we're members and everyone was "free".

New at the Zoo

As members at the zoo (at a certain level) we were invited to preview the new sun bear exhibit, the sumatran tiger and clouded leopard exhibits. I only got a few pictures this time, the sun bear was particularly uncooperative with photos. We'll return after the initial uproar is faded some.

Views of Zoo Atlanta

After our family service day, we visited Zoo Atlanta. I must say it was PACKED. We had a hard time finding any parking either on the Grant Park side or the Zoo side. Fortunately, we're members so we can skip the most busy of the areas and just see the 'highlights'. Anything we miss, we'll go back later to see. They're creating a new exhibit for the tiger and leopard. They're adding a sun bear to the area.

Views from the Zoo

We took the kids to Zoo Atlanta Friday since Bill had the day off. My camera actually cooperated for the most part and I was able to get a few good pictures. Here are some of the ones I took.

Views from the Zoo

We went to the Member's Only night at the Zoo Saturday. We were able to see the 3 lion cubs frolicking out in their enclosure, with mom keeping an eye on them. Dad was off to the side after having had his turn with the cubs.

We always enjoy visiting and evenings are a fairly good time to visit. Mornings are still the best, though. Anyway, I need a new camera. Out of some 96 pictures I took, maybe 4 came out unblurred.. and the animals were HOLDING STILL. Ugh. So here are 2 of the ones that came out unblurred and one that is semi-unblurred.

Zoo Atlanta

We went to the Zoo yesterday and this time my camera didn't mess up. So I thought I'd share a few of the pics we took.
