PSA: Atlanta History Center Homeschool Day Tuesday September 8

The Atlanta History Center’s next Homeschool Day is Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM.  This month’s theme is Georgia Farm Life.  Become a Georgia pioneer and enter into a real working farm to find out what it was like to live during the 1800s. Immerse yourself in a first-person experience, meeting over a dozen characters from the era, and helping with the chores needed to survive. 

During this ongoing, hands-on experience, kids of all ages will love interacting with historic characters while they help wash clothes, make candles, listen to stories, and assist our cook, woodworker, blacksmith, farmer, and so much more. Come dressed and ready to get your hands dirty!  (Please note that all activities will take place outside on the Smith Family Farm, rain or shine.)

While the special programming is only from 1:00—4:00 PM, you are welcome to spend the entire day at the History Center for this reduced rate. We are currently undergoing renovations to our main entrance.  The Atlanta History Center main entrance will be temporarily located at 3299 Andrews Drive, admissions and ticketing will be temporarily housed in the atrium of our Archives building, McElreath Hall, and free and accessible parking will remain available on-site.  All exhibitions will remain open, but guests will enter the museum through the back of the building.  Signs are posted to guide you.

Fernbank Museum Announces Holiday Programming, Events and Annual WINTER WONDERLAND Exhibition

ATLANTA, November 13, 2014—This holiday season, Fernbank Museum of Natural History features several ways to celebrate with fun and unique events. Fernbank’s holiday programming includes the Winter Wonderland: Celebrations & Traditions Around the World exhibition, a Winter Wonderland Celebration Day, Winter Wonderland evening viewing hours during Martinis & IMAX®, Holly Jolly Activities and holiday shopping in the Museum Store.

Winter Wonderland

On view from November 21, 2014 through January 11, 2015, the fifth annual Winter Wonderland exhibition includes two floors of festive trees and displays decorated by cultural partners to reflect traditions and holidays celebrated by cultures everywhere. Twinkling with lights, glimmering with color and shining with a variety of cultural objects, more than 30 trees and other displays recognize the diversity of celebrations, holidays, traditions and events from around the world. The exhibition highlights cultural celebrations from North America, South America, Africa, Europe, The Caribbean, Mediterranean and Middle East.

Winter Wonderland Celebration Day

Special festivities kick off with a Winter Wonderland Celebration Day on Saturday, November 22 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., where families can enjoy a special day of cultural and holiday-themed performances from The Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker Ensemble, the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu and Peruvian group Apu Inka.

Holly Jolly Activities

The fun continues on weekends from November 29 through December 21 with Holly Jolly Activities, featuring a Puppet Factory hosted by The Center for Puppetry Arts on Saturdays from noon until 2 p.m., winter-themed Tadpole Tales on December 27 and 28 at 1:30 p.m. and classic holiday cartoons every weekend. Fernbank Museum Continues 97 Days of Play with Carnival Science Day

Enjoy Circus Performers, Science Shows, Games And Much More!

ATLANTA July 3, 2014 – Fernbank Museum of Natural History (fernbankmuseum.org) announces Carnival Science Day on July 26 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This new family day will embody the fun of a carnival, all while teaching guests a little bit about the science that inspires all of those fun games and tricks.

Big Thinkers Science Exploration will be performing Air Up There at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. This exciting show will feature a hovercraft and a cannon that will launch smoke ring cannons into the audience. This show will amaze guests and leave them more knowledgeable about the world around them.

The Imperial OPA will bring along a stilt walker, a hoop dancer and a strolling musician. These talented characters are sure to amaze as they pose for pictures and perform tricks.

Guests will also have the chance to create their own optical illusion. The Giggy Thaumatrope will teach guests about the persistence of vision using printed images and chopsticks, which will turn into a colorful picture when twirled.

As always, Fernbank will have an exciting array of games to keep guests entertained, including a carnival ring toss, a game of planko and much more.

In honor of this special event, The Fernbank Café will get in the spirit by serving up special carnival-themed treats that will ensure that guests’ taste buds will have fun as well.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the permanent exhibition Sensing Nature to experience various interactives that help guests learn about the relationship between science and their senses in a new and exciting way.

At the Atlanta History Center when one door closes, two more open. The Atlanta History Center is excited to announce the opening of Wilbur G. Kurtz: History in Gone With the Wind. The exhibition, located in McElreath Hall at the Atlanta History Center, is FREE to the public. Visitors learn about the influence Kurtz had as the historian and technical advisor on the film’s accuracy and depiction of Atlanta, Tara, and the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Splash Into Fernbank For A Puppet Show, Crafts, Games And More!

ATLANTA, May 24, 2014 – Fernbank Museum of Natural History continues its summer-long celebration of fun, 97 Days of Play, with Fins & Flippers Day. On Saturday, June 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. patrons are invited to come soak up summer adventure inspired by the special exhibition Whales: Giants of the Deep (on view), and the new film Great White Shark, now showing in Fernbank’s IMAX® Theatre.

That Puppet Guy, Lee Bryan will be performing his popular one-man show, Circus Fanta-Sea. Guests of all ages can see Captain Tater Tot, the Pirate Captain and Ringmaster, who loses all his circus cargo in a mighty storm at sea. 

Fins & Flippers Day will feature a biofacts table, where guests can see a shark jaw, fish skeleton and much more. Fernbank educators will be available to answer questions and provide fascinating facts.

Keeping with the ocean theme, guests can also see a life-size inflatable right whale calf provided by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. Fernbank staff members will be available to provide interesting facts and information about these magnificent creatures.

PSA: Atlanta History Center - Juneteenth: The First Day of Freedom

This month at the Atlanta History Center we are celebrating freedom with Juneteenth, a two-day family program on June 21^st and 22^nd. This family program coincides with the last Wells Fargo Free Admission Weekend, which allows guests to receive free admission to the historic houses, 22 acres of gardens, interactive program experiences, and exhibitions, including The Kinsey Collection. Attendees of Juneteenth explore the themes of freedom and family history through a variety of workshops, performances, and kid-friendly activities. Highlights of the weekend include Meet the Past gallery performances based on a few of the influential African American artists and writers featured in The Kinsey Collection as well as storytelling at Smith Family Farm. “Moments of Happiness” Short Film

Happiness is all around us and it happens every day. That’s the spirit of the new film in the Coca-Cola Theater. The six-minute film celebrates some of life’s most memorable moments experienced by people of different ages and cultures around the world.

“We refer to the World of Coca-Cola as the Home of Happiness, so it makes a lot of sense that we feature a film that reflects that,” said General Manager of Retail and Attractions for The Coca-Cola Company, Russell Jacobs. “The film follows people going through milestone life experiences like skydiving for the first time, along with moments like surprising a loved one on a special occasion. The mobile app is designed to be used at the World of Coca-Cola. Guests can check in automatically when they arrive by enabling Bluetooth on their iPhones. The app then delivers engaging content as they travel throughout the attraction. After unlocking the app features, guests can continue to enjoy them long after their visit.

Howard Finster: Visions of Coca-Cola Gallery

Opening May 23, the World of Coca-Cola’s new gallery in Pop Culture will feature works from Howard Finster. A self-taught artist and Baptist minister from Georgia, Finster is considered one of the most important folk artists of the 20th century. He loved Coca-Cola and often used the iconic bottle shape in his artwork.

Howard Finster: Visions of Coca-Cola will include items from The Thomas E. Scanlin Collection, including:

• A 13-foot-tall Coke bottle “big enough for man to stand in” that depicts historical figures in the artist’s unique style
• The 8-foot-tall original folk art bottle, which Finster created for the 1996 Olympic Games and inspired a global art project
• Tools from Finster’s studio that became works of art themselves

Anniversary Celebration Ticket Offer

The Atlanta attraction is celebrating its seventh anniversary since it moved to Pemberton Place in downtown Atlanta with a special ticket offer for early risers. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, the first 700 guests to purchase tickets at walk-up ticket windows will pay $7 for general admission with a limit of seven discounted tickets per guest. The discount represents a $9 savings from the regular adult ticket price. 

The discounted tickets will not be available online, and will only be valid for admission on May 24. Regular general admission ticket prices will apply following the 700th guest.

If you haven't guessed by now, I'm against banning books. I grew up reading many of those books that are now banned in our school and local libraries. I loved the opportunity to read something new and then have the opportunity to DISCUSS what it meant with others. It gave me the opportunity to LEARN new ideas and concepts and to DISCOVER that not everyone was going to have my point of view. It allowed me to develop a sense of TOLERANCE for others, but allowed me the OPPORTUNITY to find out why.

PSA - @FurKidsinc some available cats

My daughter and I visited the FurKids shelter Saturday for a bit. In the process, we took some pictures of some of those that are available.

Maddox - a big boy, very sweet. He liked my daughter's lap.

Mango has been there a while. A very sweet girl.

Fifi wanted to visit and had an odd sort of meow. Not much more than a squeak, she did voice her opinion.

Michael has been there a while too. A very sweet boy, definitely a lap cat with a very quiet meow.

He tucked his head under my arm to sleep while I was holding him.

Mini-PSA - FurKids

We stopped in at the FurKids shelter yesterday to pick up our little one from his neuter surgery. While waiting, we visited one room of kitties. My daughter and I took a definite liking to these two. The first one is 'Brandon'. A wonderful boy, very sweet. I LOVED the markings.

This is Grace. She was my daughter's favorite of the evening. Can't you tell?

Tomorrow is a big day in our house. Not only will I have 5 teen/tween boys in the house, but my son will have his 13th birthday. Oi.
