On both days, June 16th & 17th, the History Center opens its entire campus for free to the metro Atlanta community. The family-friendly and educational special programming for both days is detailed below.

Every year, the Atlanta History Center is pleased to extend free admission to the community on both Juneteenth days, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Dia de Muertos/Day of the Dead.

 In his 2017 memoir and New York Times bestseller, The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South, author, blogger, and culinary historian Michael W. Twitty took readers to the white-hot center of the debate over who “owns” Southern food. He traced the roots of his family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine. Be prepared for thrills and chills as you walk through the Atlanta History Center’s foggy gardens and haunted historic houses! Step onto the page as fairy tales, Victorian literature, fables, and nursery rhymes take on a new twist. Scare factors help you determine which trails and historic houses are the adventure you are seeking. This year, you are invited to a whimsical and wacky Mad Hatter Tea Party as you kick off your night of fancy and fright.

This special program is $20 for general public; $15 for members; $10 for children.

Atlanta History Center Viking Homeschool day January 4 @AtlHistCenter

The Atlanta History Center’s next Homeschool Day is Monday, January 4^th, 2016 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM.  This month’s theme is Vikings. Were the Vikings ruthless conquerors, fearless explorers, or both? Delve into this fascinating and mysterious time period and learn about Viking culture and society, travel and trade, mythology, technology, and more.

Go to Viking Boot Camp and then participate in a Viking Raid Simulation. Learn about Norse Mythology and the Norse origins of many of our modern day words. Travel back to a Scandinavian village and interact with Vikings in their everyday lives. Learn the truth behind some common Viking misconceptions. At the craft table, make a runestone, Viking ship, helmet, and more!

While the special programming is only from 1:00 — 4:00 PM, you are welcome to spend the entire day at the History Center for this reduced rate. Many people come early (we open at 10:00 AM) and spend the first part of the day exploring our exhibitions, gardens, and historic houses, and then participate in the Homeschool Day program in the afternoon. Please Note: Chick-fil-A is now CLOSED. If you would like to eat lunch on property, you may bring a picnic lunch, or go to one of the nearby restaurants and re-enter the museum with your AHC receipt.

PSA: Atlanta History Center Homeschool Day Tuesday September 8

The Atlanta History Center’s next Homeschool Day is Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM.  This month’s theme is Georgia Farm Life.  Become a Georgia pioneer and enter into a real working farm to find out what it was like to live during the 1800s. Immerse yourself in a first-person experience, meeting over a dozen characters from the era, and helping with the chores needed to survive. 

During this ongoing, hands-on experience, kids of all ages will love interacting with historic characters while they help wash clothes, make candles, listen to stories, and assist our cook, woodworker, blacksmith, farmer, and so much more. Come dressed and ready to get your hands dirty!  (Please note that all activities will take place outside on the Smith Family Farm, rain or shine.)

PSA: Atlanta History Center events in November #FreeDay #DayoftheDead #Familyfun #DiaDeLosMuertos @AtlHistCenter

Join the Atlanta History Center on Sunday, November 2^nd, from noon to 5:00 pm for the annual celebration of Day of the Dead. It’s a free admission day, including access to the entire campus as well as festival activities. Enjoy authentic Mexican food, decorated altars honoring lost family and friends, and a full day of dance performances and artist demonstrations. More information HERE.

The Atlanta History Center’s newest temporary exhibition American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music opens on Saturday, November 15^th, with a full day of activities that celebrate Latin music and dance. This date also marks the beginning of the Ford Free Admission Weekends, held in conjunction with the American Sabor display. Guests can enjoy free admission on November 15^th and 16^th, December 13^th and 14^th, as well as January 17^th and 18^th courtesy of the Ford Motor Company Fund. Also this month, the Atlanta History Center hosts the Southeastern Indians Heritage Program on Saturday, November 22, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Visitors learn about the Southeastern Indians’ culture and history through demonstrations, activities, and discussions led by Native Americans. More information HERE.

Never forget the monthly programs designed with the younger history buffs in mind! Homeschool Day this month focuses on WWI and is held on Thursday, November 6^th, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. This month’s Magic Mondays, held on November 10^th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, takes the little ones out to the farm where they help with preparing for the approaching winter months. While summer is coming to an end for the school-age kids, the Atlanta History Center is ready to keep the summer-fun going!

This month families are welcome to attend the Meet the Past Festival on Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Attendees will experience the best of Atlanta History Center Meet the Past museum theatre offerings through interactions with characters that bring to life the stories of people from Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Throughout the campus first-person interpreters share about prominent figures from Atlanta’s past as well as common indiviuals through dialogues and interactive experiences – giving a new understanding of history. Guests will even have the opportunity to take part in historical simulations and learn dances from the mid-nineteenth century. Click here for more info.

Also during August is the Atlanta History Center’s annual Homeschool Day Open House, on Monday, August 11, 2014 from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. Homeschooling families are invited to explore the Atlanta History Center’s museum, historic houses, and gardens FREE OF CHARGE. The Battle of Peachtree Creek Commemorative Weekend takes place July 18^th through July 19^th. The complete weekend schedule is available at AtlantaHistoryCenter.com/Battle. The weekend kicks-off with a Friday evening musical and theatrical performance A Sweet Strangeness Thrills My Heart: The World of Sallie Independence Foster, 1861 – 1887. On Saturday, The Battle of Peachtree Creek Family Program provides everyone an opportunity to learn about the battle by engaging in a multitude of activities throughout the day, including special exhibition tours that allow guests to take the role of a Union or Confederate soldier, a Civil War encampment, cooking demonstrations, and Civil War musical performances. Leave the kids with your baby-sitter and return during the evening for the Civil War After Dark program, in which visitors experience special exhibition tours that tell the seedy side of the war, Civil War Improv, and moonshine themed cocktails as well as local beers. On Sunday, participate in the commemoration from the comfort of your home by monitoring the Atlanta History Center blog on AtlantaHistoryCenter.tumblr.com, which will be posting real-time updates, personal accounts, images, and artifacts from the Battle of Peachtree Creek.

 

Not able to come that weekend? No worries, we still have a lot to offer. The Kinsey Collection will be on display until July 13^th, with the final gallery performances being held on July 12^th and 13^th. So come see the exhibition before it moves on to another location! At the Atlanta History Center when one door closes, two more open. The Atlanta History Center is excited to announce the opening of Wilbur G. Kurtz: History in Gone With the Wind. The exhibition, located in McElreath Hall at the Atlanta History Center, is FREE to the public. Visitors learn about the influence Kurtz had as the historian and technical advisor on the film’s accuracy and depiction of Atlanta, Tara, and the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. It’s also a great window into the art of filmmaking during the golden age of Hollywood. Click here for more info. Also opening this month, only July 18^th, is Confederate Odyssey: The George W. Wray Jr. Civil War Collection. Artifacts in this exhibition are on display for the first time ever and include the rarest-of-the-rare: Southern-made uniforms, flags, firearms, bayonets, and small-caliber artillery pieces. PSA: Atlanta History Center - Juneteenth: The First Day of Freedom

This month at the Atlanta History Center we are celebrating freedom with Juneteenth, a two-day family program on June 21^st and 22^nd. This family program coincides with the last Wells Fargo Free Admission Weekend, which allows guests to receive free admission to the historic houses, 22 acres of gardens, interactive program experiences, and exhibitions, including The Kinsey Collection. Attendees of Juneteenth explore the themes of freedom and family history through a variety of workshops, performances, and kid-friendly activities. Highlights of the weekend include Meet the Past gallery performances based on a few of the influential African American artists and writers featured in The Kinsey Collection as well as storytelling at Smith Family Farm. Be sure to visit the Atlanta History Center before June 17^th, when our traveling exhibition Following in the Bartrams’ Footsteps closes. An indoor and outdoor exhibition that teaches visitors about the history of flora, fauna, and culture in the colonial American southeast makes a perfect first stop for those just out of school and ready to take advantage of summer break. This exhibition is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday, Noon – 5:00 pm.
