I was invited to attend a media show in exchange for my honest review.

"Marietta Theatre Company is pleased to debut its third production of the 2017-2018 season -- First Date. A romantic musical comedy written by Austin Winsberg,  First Date will run from February 9 through February 24 at the Lyric Studio on the Square. The award-winning play wittingly depicts the desires and desperations of dating, starting from the awkward first date -- all put to the score of Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner.

Since its original production at Seattle’s A Contemporary Theater in 2012, First Date has brought the all-too-real challenge of looking for love in the city to commiserating audiences around the world. Starring Ashley Prince as Casey and Chris Saltalamacchio as Aaron, both making their Marietta Theatre Company debuts, hopeful and hopeless romantics alike will revel in this relatable off-Broadway show."

If your friend or family member set you up on a blind date, what would you do?  How would you react?  A very irreverant presentation of the "what not to do" aspects of a first date.  A small cast of 7 people present what would happen "if".  Not something to show to the younger set (some language, innuendos, etc), but definitely a great show for adults to check out. 

The cast did an awesome job.  My daughter and I were impressed by their skills.  John Jenkins and his roll as Reggie (the bail out call) was hilarious.  He expressed versatility by performing multiple rolls during the performance.    Becky Ittner was great with her rolls as the sister, grandmother, facebook, and more.  A wonderfully talented cast.

If you follow me in instagram or facebook, you've seen some of these.  My family and I were invited out to Medieval Times Atlanta on Wednesday night to Crash the Castle as part of their 10th anniversary celebration.  We had the opportunity to tour behind the scenes and see where preparation  for the show happens as well as the stables.

Admittedly, we've been here before, but I LOVE going.  Dinner is always good.  For those of you that love a bargain, keep checking their site and deal sites.  You can usually find something going on to help you out with price.  They also have a birthday club you can join.

Driving Miss Daisy @AuroraTheatre

I was given passes to attend media night at the Aurora Theater in downtown Lawrenceville.  I didn't do what I did last time, which was to have dinner at one of the restaurants downtown.  When I got to the downtown area, most of the restaurants were full and I wasn't sure I'd be able to get in and eat in time to go to the show.  So, instead, I just had a cupcake at Special Kneads.  Not the best dinner, but definitely satisfactory for my night out.

"This timeless story follows the unlikely 25 year friendship of Miss Daisy, a Jewish widow and her African-American chauffeur Hoke. In 1948 Atlanta, their relationship gets off to a steely beginning, but as they navigate the bumpy road of bigotry together a profound, life-altering friendship blossoms. Full of wit and charm, this 1988 Pulitzer Prize winner takes audiences on an unforgettable journey."

The set is fairly simple, keeping with the story line.  3 chairs were the car, a desk for Boolie, and a chair for Daisy.  The theater was an intimate setting and you're very close to the cast.  Seating is general admission.

The doors opened a little before 8 with the show starting about 8:30.  It's back to the original theater production, so keep the movie out of your minds if you go.  With 3 cast members performing the entire show, it lasts about an hour.  Hoke Colburn was played by Rob Cleveland, Daisy Werthan was played by Jill Jane Clements, and  Boolie was played by Jared Simon.  All three cast members did an outstanding job with their roles.    A wonderful story, but definitely not politically correct.

The show runs through October 19th.  The lead actor will change on September 28th.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased from the Aurora Theater website.

Semi-review: FLY!

I won tickets from Macaroni Kid to see the show FLY! My family, though, were all poops and so I went by myself. It was more of a story-teller type show than a traditional (or what I would consider traditional) play. 7 gentlemen tell the tale of some of the Tuskegee Airmen. From their decisions to join the Corp to their time in Alabama through their service in the War. I can't describe too much of it, or I'll give it away, so I'll leave it with the fact that *I* thoroughly enjoyed it. Wonderful story telling in the part of the actors. Reasonable prices for the show. Heads up to parents that there is some profanity, but it fits with the story. It's playing through February, check their web site for details.
