Bye Bye Birdies

My mother in law found this guy and we all had to come out and look. I used to have baby finches/wrens in that bird house. I know they're not there now. This guy was probably about a foot to a foot and a half long, probably 1/2 inch in diameter. He eventually curled up IN the house to get away from us and was gone by mid-afternoon. I don't know what type of snake he is. Anyone?

I think we've identified the culprit as a brown water snake. The bird house is a the top of the bank of our creek. Lots of vegetation on the far side of the bank. So he'd have just climbed the bank, then up the pole for brunch.
