Subject: Ways to Help

For those folks in the Atlanta area, busloads of hurricane victims have just arrived at South Dekalb mall. Tents have been set up for donations of clothing, food, water, etc. There is a particular need for personal items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. There are many babies, so Pampers are needed too. If you have the time, swing by. They will be receiving donations until 8 p.m.

The devastation resulting from Hurricane Katrina has resulted in at least two groups of people coming to Atlanta who need help with lodging.

Some 300 students from Tulane University are coming to Georgia Tech. U.S. students will stop at Tech on their way to their homes. International students, however, cannot simply go home and then come right back. They will need housing in Atlanta until Tulane reopens, perhaps as much as two months. If you can provide housing for one or more of these students, call Steve Fazenbaker (404.892.6317) and he will coordinate with Tech officials.

Fifty patients are on their way to Grady Hospital from the Gulf Coast states. Their families are being evacuated with them and will need shelter when they get to Atlanta on Thursday, Sept. 1. Sonya Cruel of Grady is looking for help. I assume the time here could vary, depending on the illness involved and how quickly recovery can take place. Call Sonya at 404.616.2663 to help with this.

These are large commitments to ask, and many of us will not be able to respond to this request. Some of us can.
