Review: The Orphan King @WaterBrookPress

From the back cover of the book - 'The last words of a dying woman would change the life of young Thomas. Raised behind monastery walls, he knows nothing of his mysterious past or fulfilling his imminent destiny'. The story starts with Thomas, a young man who has been raised in an abbey, deciding to take his life out of the abbey and fulfill his vow to his nurse. Upon setting out, he finds his life both complicated and assisted while rescuing three others from the gallows. He is moving toward his destiny, though he only has vague ideas of what is coming.

A good start to a new series. The Orphan King is the first in the Immortals Series by Sigmund Brouwer. A Christian based story aimed at young adults, starting at about the middle school age. Even though Thomas was raised in an abbey (or perhaps because of it), he doubts the existence of God (or any other god). By the end he has begun asking questions to possibly move toward an acceptance.

The book itself is a relatively quick and easy read. A mix of fantasy and adventure added in to keep it moving and interesting. The characters could have used a bit more background, maybe the next in the series will give us more.
