Most of you have probably heard this, but since I was at the press conference this morning, it's been on my mind all day. The Georgia Aquarium is expanding! They're adding a dolphin encounter/exhibit that will hopefully open November of 2010. Bernie said he hopes to be able to have an encounter for his Marcus' Institute kids (developmental disabilities, incl. autism). I'm sure if they do, there will be an option for the general public to have encounters as well. All of it is still primarily in the planning stage. Construction is set to begin in August. If you go to the Aquarium, look for the big banner that hangs between the River Scout and Cold Water Quest galleries. That will be the entrance to the new area.
Unfortunately, the expansion means losing our Sea Lions. They've found new homes for them all and will move (I would guess) before too long. So if sea lions are your thing, visit before August!
All in all, this is a really cool thing. With all the hotels and restaurants and shops that are opening up around Centennial Park, this will bring even more visitors to our city.
You can see the offical press release on the Aquarium web site.
