Projects

The two coats of KILZ primer were applied to the cabinets yesterday. My children did most of the work. I went back and caught drips and filled in gaps.

We got out our plant starter kits and planted our seeds in small greenhouses yesterday. They'll start growing inside while we plot out the garden.

I have to call insurance today to see about the status of my claim (adjustor said I should hear within 48 hours). Once that gets started, the roofer said I could put stuff in the dumpster. I'll work on getting rid of more stuff then.

For Today - at least one coat of paint on the cabinets, measuring the garden and a picnic in the park.

Starting the cabinets

While I wait to see if the electrician will call me this morning, I started the kids with sealing the bathroom cabinets (they wanted to do it). They want to help with the room painting too, but until I've seen the electrician that'll wait.

Room Re-do

There's always SOMETHING that has to be done on the house. Now that insurance is going to replace my roof, I'm concentrating inside. I found the color paint I'm going to use for the old play room, called raffia ribbon. It's a tan that leads more toward gold. Anyway, as I was prepping the room to paint (getting furniture away from walls, spackling screw holes, etc) I realized that I have to take the single light fixture off of the wall to paint properly. When I first put it up, it was ok to have the cord hanging down the wall since large shelves were hiding it. With the room rearranged, this just won't work. So now there's no lighting in the room. I was going to have to contact an electrician anyway because two closest don't have lights. Now I'll just move up the timetable and see how much 3 will be. There's no fixture or wiring in any of the three locations yet.

My husband says I came up with a 'wild hair' yesterday as well. Before I headed to HD to get paint, I decided I was going to strip the cabinets in the downstairs bathroom. They need the help and compared to the kitchen cabinets will be a cinch. So, while I wait on the electrician's verdict, the play room is in a holding pattern and I'll work on the bathroom instead.

Isn't home renovation fun?

10 millionth guest

So yesterday the Georgia Aquarium had it's 10 millionth guest go through. While exciting and all that, I found what went on just before to be more interesting. A group of soldiers from Ft. Bragg (assuming I heard correctly) heading out to Iraq & Afghanistan later in the day or early in the morning stopped by for a brief visit. Everyone had already gathered in the atrium to welcome the special guest and when we heard they were coming in everyone gave them a standing ovation. I have to say it was definitely one of those moments that I'll remember. I wish them all well, here's a picture I have of them with Bernie Marcus. It's taken with my phone in a rather dark atrium, so I apologize for the quality. I did clean it up some, it's just the camera and the lighting.

Reorg Day 3

At the end of day 2.5 I was actually finished with as much as I can do. The room needs a new coat of paint, the walls show the wear of having been a play room for the last 10 years. So, the next step will be to figure out what color and the next opportunity I get I will be painting it. From there the room will change functions to an "entertainment" room. We'll move the big TV from the den to this room as well as the futon. The videos have already moved. Notably missing from the room is the twin set of black shelves on the opposite wall. That's been 'recycled' to the hall closet. It now holds the multitude of board games that we own. That closet and one other need to get lights, so at some point I guess I'll have to call the electrician and see how much THAT will cost. It can wait a bit, though.

The Lego table will, for the time anyway, remain in this room. There's just no room for it or my daughter's drum set anywhere else.

Reorg Day 2

So Tuesday was sort and purge day. I did put a few of the bigger things away upstairs. I took a lot of things that are never played with (never opened in a couple of instances) away. The little stuff was sorted into trash or 'maybe keep' and put in a small bin. The kids can sort through that when they get home. It's still a mess, but I'm making progress.

Playroom reorganization Day 1

So, Monday was day 1 of my 5 step/day program to "fix" the playroom. This included retiring Thomas to the attic (for grandkids, the sets are too expensive to do otherwise) and taking all board games out of the room. I'm turning the hall closet into the board game closet, so they'll reside there once it's done. A simple portion of this was taking all pillows out and putting them back where they belonged and dumping most of the stuffed animals into my daughter's room (where they came from). I probably could have done more had I not already worked half day at the Aquarium before trying to tackle it. I was also expecting a roofer by to give me an estimate on roof repair. Besides, the target was to redo the playroom, not run me down in the heat.

Fixing up the Playroom

Before I disassemble and rearrange, I figured I should start with a set of "before" pictures.

I've already put towels from the hall closet into the cabinet under the sink in my kids' bathroom. The heavy blankets and comforters I've stored in the attic, so the hall closet is half empty. I may take more out, we'll see.

Swing set

So, the swing set that my father-in-law and hubby put up when my son was a year old has been mostly dismantled. It's now sitting in my front yard, waiting for a new home. It's old home is going to be converted into a garden area for my kids. They've already picked out a selection of seeds to start and a couple of plants. We'll get hubby to till the (mostly) clay so that we can at least TRY to grow someting back there.

Today a teenager is coming to clean up all the limbs/branches in my yard. Gonna hide them behind the shed. I may rent a mulcher from home depot that'll crunch them up.. I'll give hubby a little bit of time to finish cutting up the cutable stuff before I give up and do my thing.

Said teenager also gets to help me assemble the newest fun thing in the house.. our trampoline. I picked it up from someone on Craigslist. Got it used for less than $100 including the gas it took to go get it. I'll post a picture of it once it's assembled.

Daughter's Birthday Review

Here are some scenes from my daughter's birthday sleepover. It wasn't total chaos, but it was very busy..

Poor boy..

I signed hubby up to take his daughter out to the American Girl Bistro today. They're having a 'date with dad'. Great timing since her birthday was yesterday. I gave her Chrissa for her birthday and she plans on taking her along with them for the dinner part. My husband has been "on no" ing since I told him about it. My daughter, though, is quite excited.

Aqua Globes

I went by Home Depot the other day to pick up a few things. Among what I bought were some Aqua Globes. I was asked when I went to check out if they actually worked, my answer was "yes!". They do work. I have a peace plant that constantly wants water. I'm lucky to remember to water my plants on a good day. With the Aqua Globes, it gives me the leeway to be a bit forgetful. They also mean if I go on vacation, I don't have to worry about most of my plants being watered. If you check your local Wal-Mart of Home Depot, they're about $9.99 for a two pack. Cheaper that way than ordering them online and having them shipped.

Off Kilter

I love watching this group at EPCOT when I get a chance. I 'videoed' this from my little camera.

Now back..

to our 'regularly' scheduled summer. Actually, today is "attempt to plan daughter's birthday party" knowing that we're giving guests less than a week notice. The cake has been ordered (it's covered in Disney's fairies), some of the snacks obtained. I have to call the county and see if I can turn our inflatable slide into a water slide as well as get said slide out of storage. Kids have to clean the playroom this week (or there will be no place for kids to sleep). I have some general cleaning/freshening of the house to do (a house closed up for 2 weeks clean still stinks when you get home). Plus plenty of other things I can't remember right now.
